Enough with the low res game comparisons, let's look at some high definition video. First comparison is from the anime series Mawaru Penguindrum (Episode 4). I'm now also including my PC monitor in the comparisons.

Picture 1: Video displayed at 576i (downscaled by the PS3) on the Philips 28PT4458/01
Picture 2: Video displayed at 1024x768 on a Samtron 98PDF (19 inch CRT monitor from 2006)
Picture 3: Video displayed at 1080i through HDSDI on the Sony BVM-D32E1WE
Picture 4: Video displayed at 1080p on the Panasonic TX-L42ETW60

I think these photos show quite well the difference in resolution.
The Samtron can handle 1080p as well and it can resolve it too, but I'm not using it at those high resolutions. It looks best at 1024x768, which it can display with a refresh rate of 100hz. And that's how I decided to photograph it too.

There is not much between the BVM and the Panasonic here. Of course the LCD TV is sharper, but it doesn't show any more detail, not with this kind of source material.

And it may look like the Philips TV has weak colors compared to the other displays, but that is not so. Out of the 4 displays I'm comparing here, it is the brightest. And this here is a bright scene. I had to choose a significantly lower exposure time to actually see anything at all. With the same settings as the BVM or Samtron you would only see a lot of white. Very difficult to capture the look. Seeing it in person is damn impressive.
